I saw whales today ...

... two beautiful humpback whales swimming side by side, so close and in such perfect synchronicity that at first sight I thought it was just one lone creature.

They surfaced and sprayed; they dived, surfaced again.  All in all they spent about 30 minutes in close proximity to the shore swimming in lazy circles, and finally, as they moved on to continue their  journey north, one raised it's broad white tail and waved, like it knew we were watching.

It was wonderful. Unfortunately my little camera is not up to such shots, but a SLR with a telephoto lens is certainly on my wish list at the moment. :)

Yes, that story came to my mind too! (It was one of your reincarnation fics, wasn't it?) I'm sure Thomas was the one who waved. :P

Yes, it was very exciting. Sadly, I need a more powerful camera to take such photos; I'm tempted to look for one now. :)

Well, I hope to see many more. The migration has just started and will continue for a month or so. Then in spring the whales will return to the south, with the calves that have been born over winter.

Isn't it? This is my first sighting! There have been lots of dolphins all through summer, but this is the first of the humpbacks. :)
