Day twenty four - medusa head

Today's entry for naarmamo  is another sculptured head, this one is from the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul.

Soft pastels on black art paper.
One of two medusa heads in the 6th century Roman cistern below Istanbul.  The head is the base of one of the hundreds of columns that stand in the water and support the vaulted ceiling.  There are only two such bases in the cistern, this one is placed on its side the other is upside down.  The water laps the lower edge of the head.

This is wonderful--the feel of the sculpture comes through.

Very nice and atmospheric; she looks like dark marble, almost translucent. I like the subtly render column behind her too.
